What is Smoke Screening?
Smoke Screening is a group of young people in NSW who are concerned about smoking and tobacco promotion in popular culture and media such as in the movies and want to do something about it.
The Cancer Council NSW provides training for members on how to conduct media interviews and speak about the issue on TV and radio. Smoke Screening members also get the chance to attend film screenings, conduct movie reviews, make short films and monitor youth events for tobacco promotion.
Decisions are made by the XEC (Executive committee) who hold regular meetings to discuss group activity and events.
Two XEC members represented the group and presented at an international tobacco control conference in New Zealand this year.

Why did other people join?
“Smoking is so disgusting and it is killing people everyday. It is not cool and I want other young people like myself to understand that.”“
“I think its bad that they are smoking in movies that they are making young kids think it is very cool to smoke”.“Because I hate smoking and being subjected to people smoking in my face. Also because I have seen family members die as a result of smoking”.
“I hate smoking…I hate the damage that smoking can do to your body. I hate the smell that comes with cigarettes. And most of all I hate the promotion of smoking”.
“I am concerned that smoking’s portrayal in the media is why so many young people smoke, even though we are now all aware of its dangers. I know I began smoking as a teenage and they are the weakest link, then spend years battling with the addiction”.

MYTH: There isn’t a lot of smoking in movies any more so what’s the problem? A US study found that 2 out of every 3 youth rated movies had tobacco in them and 9 out of every 10 R rated movies did
